Pharmacodynamics

Penicillin is a Beta-lactam antibiotic, in the natural penicillins subclass. By binding to the appropriately named penicillin binding proteins (PBPs) it inhibits cell wall synthesis.

Drug Interactions

Probenecid will prolong the half-life of penicillin

Penicillin will decrease vitamin K production in the gut, leading to an increase in INR when used in conjunction with warfarin.

Pencillin interacts with estrogen containing contraceptives by decreasing the enterohepatic recycling of estrogen by gut bacteria. This interaction is not well documented.

Superinfection

May lower the seizure threshold
